Looking at getting a decent screen for photo editing, and sometime in the future getting a decent desktop. But in the meantime I'm lumbered with an old Lenovo 3000 V100, which has an integrated Intel GMA950. Is it worth getting a decent 24 inch screen, or will it be too hobbled by this graphics card? Not too worried about performance - 1GB RAM and a slow processor make that pretty pathetic anyway - just need to know if it can handle a decent resolution & refresh rate. Would other things like the colour gamut be affected? I have a pretty expensive purchasing roadmap what with lenses and all that so two years may pass until I can afford a proper desktop...

Cheers

Integrated video will not really hold you back. The low amount of RAM and the slow CPU will.

The graphics card does not affect color gamut capabilities of whatever monitor you intend on buying.

So I can believe Intel's blurb when it says "2048x1536 at 75 Hz maximum resolution" (http://www.intel.com/products/chipsets/gma950/index.htm)?

That's a funny looking resolution. A 24" LCD monitor is 1920 x 1200 so I would assume you can hook a 24" LCD screen to it.

I don't much any experience with integrated video I'm afraid. Even my IBM ThinkPad T40 from 2002 had a Radeon 7500 video card.

I recently used that video chipset GMA 950 on an 22" monitor at 1680 X 1050 with no issues.
