So, I've been learning a lot about computers these last few days. I don't have the money for a new PC so I am just going to upgrade the PC I have now.

So I just discovered the I have a Micro ATX instead of a normal one, and if I'm going to get the 9800GT graphics card, I will need to meet a 400W requirement for it. So I'm thinking of upgrading to a 400W Micro ATX PSU .

But I just read that you're not supposed to be using a PSU at full capacity. So now I'm going to need one with more than 400W, but I can't find any PSUs higher than 400W.

What should I do? Just keep the 400W one? Thanks in advance.

P.S. You don't have to read this but I'm planning to upgrade with the following in the coming months:

1.6Ghz Pentium Dual Core >> Overclocked to around 2.0Ghz

Intel Integrated 64MB Video >> NVidia 9800GT

2x512MB RAM DDR2 >> 2x2GB DDR2 RAM

250W Micro ATX PSU >> still unknown...

Depending on what your case is you may be able to use a full size ATX power supply. What case are you using ? Is it a pre-built by Dell/HP etc. ? What model number ?
As an example this micro ATX mid tower case comes with an installed full size ATX 380w Earthwatts power supply.

Thanks for the response!

This is my case

That's not my computer but the casing looks identical.

I took my computer apart and the rough dimensions of my current supply are:

5.75x3.25x5.25

Is that about the size of a normal one?

Reply to mobo360

Yes, here's a link to the Antec 500 Earthwatts.
http://www.antec.com/Believe_it/product.php?id=NjU=
- 3.39"(H) x 5.91"(W) x 5.51"(D)

although slightly different, it will fit in that case. Occasionally there's a slight difference in the back panel, but i've never had trouble installing one.

That's a good recommendation but the problem is that it's little overpriced for me with the CAD conversion and shipping costs. This one is 50W less, but is half the price and in CAD, not to mention cheap shipping.

You get what you pay for

Well it got an an overall 5 star rating from 14 people, plus 3 year warranty.

What graphic card are you planning on using ? That will have an effect on what power supply you need. Perhaps a Corsair, Seasonic or a different Antec might work. I'd really try to stay away from untested or unreviewed power supplies. 2 good sites to check for reviews are.

If the 5 star rating from TD customers is enough for you go for it.

No Active PFC
Low (24amp ) 12v rail
One year warranty ( unless you pay TD $22 for 2 more years making the total $63 )
No mention of efficiency rating other than to say it's highly efficient
No UL certification

Are just a few of the reasons I would stay away.

You could shop elsewhere and get an Antec EA430 for a couple more dollars

Now I'm thinking of getting the 8400 GS- $53.00 5 star rating lifetime warranty, 450W power supply- $40.00 5star 1 yr warranty, $40.00 2GB RAM 5 star lifetime warranty. Total $167.59 CAD including taxes and shipping/handling. How's that sound for running CSS, Battlefield 2 and Left 4 Dead?

@DellUser1 I think this power supply will be sufficient because it's not like I will be using it to it's capacity or anything. Seems good quality, maybe not *great* but good enough.

as for PSU's it is an important part of a PC and any experienced builder will tell you never go cheap on a PSU, the name means a lot more than an extra 2 years warranty or its wattage.

If i PSU goes it can take the whole PC with it....

as for the graphics card you have gone from a 8800 gt to a 8400 gs in terms of prefermance thats a big drop.

the picture u showed didnt look like a micro ATX case, it may just be u have a micro atx motherbaord in it.

id suggest upgrading to a E5200 Pentium dual core with an after market heat sink if u wana over clock
ram is fine just go for a good brad like OCZ, corsair, ect
and Good bran PSU like Thermal take, antec ect

rember you get wht u pay for theres a reason summit may be 1000W but cost nothing, thats cause its crap and likely to die and take your whole PC with it after a few years

Reply to mildiner86

a beter idea may be telling us what your exact sped u have at present.

so Motherbaord, ram, graphics card (if any), Processor, PSU, hard drive.

then saying what the upgrade is for

then give us a budget

so we can argue over the best solution that be CPU, GPU and possble PSU upgrade

Well I gave some specs in the first post. I wanted the 9800GT but I think that the 8400GS would be good enough for games like CSS, or Left 4 Dead. I'm not looking for anything major, please keep that in mind. I need a good graphics card, some ram and a psu for under $200 and what I said it about $160 and they are all good quality components. I also figured out that I have a normal APX PSU unit but everything else is micro, I think. I have the Dual Core E2140 with one PCIx16 slot I believe.

Reply to mobo360

do u need a new PSU like is ur current one dead... or do u need a new one for ur upgrade.

as a 8400 GS prolly wont require a new PSU

Antec 500W £45 http://www.ebuyer.com/product/114929
GPU BFG 9500GT £46 http://www.ebuyer.com/product/168785

Around £126 which is about ur budget in $

I need it from a Canadian site, because shipping it would cost a lot more. My current CPU is like 250W, but I have a 350W lying around that I could try, but I don't know if it's enough. Plus, I don't think the 350W has PCIe x16 cables either.

Reply to mobo360

Also, I need it to be under $200 tax and shipping included.

Reply to mobo360

yeah i was giving example of things on the UK look for around the same in canada,

the 8400 GS is pretty crap a 9500 GT will be better for the games u like. personally id go for a 9600 GT or enven a 9800 GT or qual from ATI. look at the benchmarks from toms hardware

Yeah okay the same everything else with the 9500gt I can do. Thanks for the recommendation.

Reply to mobo360

I can have 4gb of ram now for still under $200. Anyone know the power needed for 9500gt?

Reply to mobo360

Here's 2 lists, one from www.newegg.ca and one from www.ncix.ca Both have good quality power supplies (380w and 400w) graphic cards better then the 8600GT or 9500GT (they're actually the same cards) and 2x2 GB of DDR2 800 1.8v RAM for $200

newegg.ca list

ncix list - included is a power cord for the PSU.

Yeah the 4670 is around 30% faster than (8600GT/9500GT) good recomendation Dirtmountain, atm ATI is prolly ur best bet for value for money.

I know there's always going to be something better for just a little bit more money. I'm already doing an upgrade from the other card I mentioned.

Reply to mobo360

So I should get this: http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicat [...] VIEWS#tabs

Instead of the 9500gt? There's a 1GB version but I read that it's pointless to have and more to attract hardware newbies.

Reply to mobo360

A good deal right now, especially if you take the rebate into account is this 9600GSO 384MB DDR3 graphic card. $69 with a $20 rebate.
