Is anyone here currently using a 1366 i7 motherboard and running Windows 2008 Hyper-V?

If so, which motherboard?

I currently have a ASRock X58 Extreme, and can't seem to get Hyper-V running on it. Keeps saying Hypervisor isn't running, I enabled all VT in the BIOS and ASRock tech support says they don't support Windows 2008 Hyper-V. Seems kind of silly.

So I'm looking to return this board, for one that supports it.

Appreciate the feedback!

In the manual they show a No-Excute Memory Protection setting under Advanced, CPU Configuration that's disabled by default. It should be enabled.

If available, is Execute Disable Bit enabled in the BIOS? That motherboard should be able to run Hyper-V.

I'll have to check on Monday when I'm back in the office, I don't recall seeing that setting but i'll double check.

Interesting, I'll check that out on Monday.
Thanks!

I enabled that, and Hyper-V is now starting!

I did notice, there is a huge drop in performance. I haven't even added any virtual machines yet!

The mouse lags around the screen whenever I do anything like open Outlook or IE, I'm guessing this is an issue with the BIOS? Anything I can do to improve the performance now?

Appreciate the help.

I must admit that I never checked the mouse behaviour as I normally access my servers via RDP. Since Windows Server 2008 is now a VM, check if video acceleration is enabled. http://support.microsoft.com/?scid [...] &x=20&y=10

Cool, that fixed the sluggishness.

I lost my dual screen capabilities now, is there anyway to restore? Man it seems like there is always something :)

I read up a little bit more on this, looks like I might just have to dump Hyper-V entirely and work with VMware Server free edition.

Certainly looks like an issue within Microsoft's hyper-v technology and there are no signs of being addressed anytime soon!

A server is not a workstation and it isn't an issue in a corporate environment. Installing Hyper-V automatically makes Windows Server 2008 run in a VM and that's fine, but it implies that you can't use video acceleration. I normally use VMWare Server for a totally different reason, i.e., my customers use ESX and I need USB and Parallel ports.

Yes, we just started off using Hyper-V and really liked it but never had any experience with VMware.

Guess I'm going to start getting some experience now, and heck maybe even switch if I like it enough :)

Thanks for the help!
