I recently built a PC for a family member. I installed Vista 32 bit and everything went fine. I had no trouble installing and booting up. I restarted the machine several times with no trouble at all. However, when it reached her, 750 miles away, she is indicating upon start-up, it keeps reading " select a first boot device." It is very hard to tell over the phone what is going on and why it did not just boot from the hard disk. I have walked her through the bios and I can make no sense of anything. Can anyone help?
Kevin, the BIOS and POST should show the hard drive listed, if it's not there, then likely one of the internal cables did come loose.
Make sure she didn't plug in a USB device like a RAM drive or ext hard drive. If so, it may have set itself as boot. Disconnect any such things to test.
Great to hear! Ah, I hate building computers for family and friends - the guilt factor, even when they are very nice, is terrible when things aren't working!

Oh yeah; you're on the money. You certainly don't want problems.
