I just started using WinXP.
One of the first things I have noticed is the OS ablity to manage RAM.
I have 512MB in my system. I have a fair amount of running apps. Currently 25 programs are running using about 130MB of RAM.
When I was using my system with WinME using the same hardware and software configurations 180MB of RAM was used.
Anyway the usual tips to speed up your system are using the system tools "disk cleanup and disk defragmenter".
Since this is my first go at an NT based OS I am not sure how well the OS manages installed memory over 512MB. With the DOS based WinME and 98SE there are issues with addressing memory above 512MB.
Before purchasing a 512MB RAM module make sure your mobo will support 512MB modules. Go to your mobo manufacture's web site to find out if your board will support 512MB modules. If you can't find out post your system specs or buy two 256MB modules.
Other things you can do would be to make sure you have the latest chipset drivers, 80 conductor ultra ata cables installed on your hard drive(s), cd rom and hard drive DMA support selected, etc.

Thanks for the info.
Yep my asus board supports 512.
I have the latest chipset drivers.
I do have 80 conductor ribbon
DMA support

I want xp to run like it was in classic mode. I know i have the video. I must have the processor for it. 900mhz. Ram is my low part. 192

So all in all. WIll this make things faster to upgrade that high. Right now i have generic memory. SO that will disappear with new memory.

Thanks for replies and keep them coming!!!

Yes more ram will help speed up xp. Perfect ammount of ram for xp is 512. I run 768 and i have no problems with mem management. Make sure you buy BRAND NAME RAM though. don't go for the generic crap. it will save you at most 10 bucks. go for infinon, crutial, or micron.

for ur snd crd, check out the manufactures web site for new drivers. i run creative platium and xp had drivers for it as they did for everything else! most sound cards should be compatible with xp.

I ran 3DMark2001 using WinXP and my score was 300 points lower than my score using WinME.
I beleive my low score is attributed to not having XP drivers for my ATI Radeon 32MB DDR graphics card and my Soundblaster Audigy soundcard.
According to the ATI and Creative web sites they will have XP drivers soon. I hope by the official release date for XP. Somehow I think I'll be waiting awhile before I see optimized drivers.
I also had problems using the driver for my integrated Intel Pro100 VE LAN hardware. In control panel under Network Connection it said my LAN adaptor was disabled for my Local Network Connection. When I tried to enable the LAN adaptor it would fail. Thus I was completely confused because I couldn't figure out how I "could" connect to the Internet and surf via my Router and LAN card.
Anyway I downloaded the latest driver and software for the Pro100 VE network card and installed the new driver and software. After rebooting my LAN adaptor was enabled.
After regurgitating what happened I figured I was able to connect to the Internet with the adaptor disabled but Windows Networking for file and print sharing would not have been active. I guess its MS's way of renaming Networking configurations in the new OS.

Oddly too under the device manager the Pro100 VE Network Adaptor was functioning properly right from the initial install of WinXP. FYI I am using a registered oem version of WinXP Home Edition.

I'm running XP Pro on 256mb of Ram and have had no problems and OS runs Great 512 is good but not really needed!
depends on your Applications of course! Will be adding another 512 in 256mb chips soon but not cause I have to just want to max out the ram in my motherboard before I sell it.

The driver installed from the WinXP CD is a basic driver to make the card functional. It does not support the extended features of the card.
The ATI web site states a driver will be available soon for full XP support.

Well golly gee ATI finally released a Driver. When I get home from work in the morning I'm going to install it and run a quick benchmark test.

Still no Multimedia Centre and DVD software available yet.
