Cheating CPU-Z

Hi,

I'm just wondering if this is possible. I can see that some stores are now seeling core i7 is getting so cheap now. I'm just wondering if they can cheat by overclocking and modifying the name of the detected processor?

CPU-Z has nothing to do with how the motherboard BIOS recognizes the installed CPU. The i7 CPU's are completely different than the Core 2 ones. They require a completely different socket and motherboard. There would be no way to, say, take a Q9550 and trick a system into thinking it's an i7. Some of the stores that are selling the i7 CPU's so cheap do so by using the OEM version which doesn't come with a heatsink.

Thank you for your quick response. What I'm afraid of is that people buying e.g. Core i7 940 (double the price of i7-920) in a pre-built PC then without realizing the store only overclocked the cpu to 2.93 and change something??? somewhere??? to show it is i7-940 even if its not. I hope an expert can give a light on this.

By the way, aside from no HSF, is there any difference?
