First ever build

hello people my first build and i would like some guidance from the community. ok this is what ive got in mind:
.raidmax sagitta 2
.OCZ 4GB PC2-8500 DDR2 1066MHz Gold Dual Channel (2x2GB)
.Asus M3N78 PRO
.xfx 9800gt
.amd phenom quad 9950
.WD Caviar Blue 640 GB Internal hard drive
and a sony DRU-860S 22x DVDRW Retail Kit - SATA

any suggestions of cheaper components or things that you've had problems with in the past

What PSU are you going to use?

I would go with DDR2-800 instead, not a noticeable drop in performance

Corsair 4gb DDR2-800
$55 ($30 after MIR)

The WD Black 640gb is $5 more, gets a little extra performance

I'd spend a bit more on the gfx card, at least a GTS 250

Old phenom's suck. Get a Phenom II on a 790gx MB. Then change the GPU to a 4830 or 4850, both are cheaper and will give you more performance for your money, and will give you the option of xfire on the the 790gx chipset.

Amd chips and the i7 will see benefit from getting faster ram, the LGA 775 platform does not because the memory controller is not integrated into the CPU.

gaming pc but unfortunetly i've already got the xfx 9800gt and ive got about £500 tops to spend.

about how much do you think ill get a 4850 for and is it worth it?

As for whether its worth it - get your system up and running first. If you're happy with the performance, don't upgrade. If you aren't, then consider upgrading. I would go for the 4870 however, if you do, since it is a more significant upgrade over the 9800gt

if i were to sell that xfx 9800gt ive already got what do you think I'd get for and where do you think i should sell it.

Ebay would be your best bet I think, I don't know if you have a craigslist or equivalent over there in the UK. You might get £70 for a used 9800GT.
