I am having over heating problems with my Gateway P-7811 FX and was wondering if anyone knows if it is possible to swap a quad core processor in to this laptop or if it is possible to pull the processor and reapply the compound. I know this is jumping to conclusions but I have tried everything else and the only thing I think it can be is the thermal compound on the processor may not have been applied right.

That laptop does not support a quad core processor . You may just want to clean out the dust bunnies in the unit , verify that the fan works properly and re-the thermal paste(after removing the old stuff) Also make sure that this is adequate airflow around the ventilator slots around the laptop while you are using it. Most people make the mistake of using the laptop in bed or setting it on a bed and the bed linens block the airflow needed to cool it down.
