I'm going to be building my first computer and I need to decide on the processor. I'm limited to buying from Amazon because I think they're the only American website that accepts international payments.
I've been using www.cpubenchmarks.net for comparisons.

The E6300 and the E7400 seem to be about the same (except the e7400 has 3mb l2 cache as opposed to 2mb). Is it worth the extra $20 to buy a Core 2 Duo CPU over a Pentium Dual Core CPU? Is it worth the extra $20 for 3mb of l2 cache as opposed to 2mb?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

they don't have stats for the E7400 but they do for the 7200 and 7500, you can basically split the difference. The results is the E7400 and E6300 offer almost identical performance.

Yeah, i worked it out that the performance is the same, but are you saying it's not worth it to get the E7400?

the E6300 is $83 on newegg and the E7400 $117, so for me it would be a no-brainer. I would probably go with the E6300 if it was $20 cheaper also.

Cool, i think i'll get the e6300 for $68 on Amazon, which is pretty good. If I bought that online in my country it would be like $120

Thanks for your help

I also think that the E6300 has virtualization for windows 7 virtual thingie while the E7xxx series don't have virtualization.

Make sure you're buying the Pentium Dual Core E6300 and not the Core 2 Duo E6300. I just checked Amazon and PDC E6300 is around $89 and the C2D is $65.

e7400 is wolfdale 45nm and 6300 is allendale 65nm.

7400 will oc way better than 6300.

E6300 comes in 2 flavors. Older 65nm C2D Allendale and the newer 45nm PDC E6300 wolfdale.

Darn intel for confusing everyone with two E6300s. Anyway if it's the Pentium E6300, then I say go for that. If it's the C2D version, then go with the 7400 instead for the extra $20.
