Need help on building 1,000 gaming/video editing rig

This is my situation. The tax man came and delivered upon me a Easter surprise of 1,000 US.
What I thought best to do would be to build a new computer.

I'm pretty sure I would need a quad core to play games + do some lite video editing/authoring, but is there a setup for a dual core that would result in better performance? I dont know what processor I should use im so kind of stuck.

I have:

5 new samsung burners
2 Western Digital Caviar Black WD1001FALS 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive
64 XP

It should be clear that I run the burners in series, so I need a full size tower/ or at least 3 bays for drives

Also should I upgrade to 64 vista?

I will likely overclock as well.

Eternal gratitude to anyone who offers any help with a awesome build.

  1. I would say it depends on how much time is spent editing vs. gaming. Also what do you expect gaming? There's no easy answer on the quad vs. dual core question, and it will depend on you more than anything else.

I'll start the ball rolling with this:
    Cooler Master HAF
  2. I would say more gaming, but im not set on 1920x1200 Cyrisis.

SYSTEM USAGE FROM MOST TO LEAST IMPORTANT: Games, HD video watching, Burning, Video Editing

PARTS NOT REQUIRED: HD, CD Drive, OS? should I up grade to Vista 64 from XP 64?

PARTS PREFERENCES: by brand or type: The best!

OVERCLOCKING: Yes SLI OR CROSSFIRE: if it is worth the cost.

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: need 3 drive spaces for burners.

Sorry to be out of format.

It's fixed now...I just saw your post of what's not needed...drops the price down a bit on this build.
  6. I was not sure about Intel Core i7.... sounds exciting!
  7. Yep that build solves everything. A quad fast enough to compete with a fast dual core.

    Did you need a monitor?
  8. No monitor. It solved my problem and a lot of time.

Should I upgrade to vista 64 from xp 64?

Oops I just saw that part about the breaks your budget. Maybe if you drop the vid card down to a gts 250...for around $'s still over budget though. :( $169.99 ($149.99 after $20.00 Mail-In Rebate) Free Shipping*

OK on the Vista 64 thing....there's threads on this, but I will say what I would do. If I had the extra cash or if I could get my hands on a freebie vista 64 I would do it in a heart beat. DX10, fast with gaming, etc... I love it to be honest. People are going to post on here to wait for Windows 7. What they don't tell you is that Windows 7 isn't going to be out until late 2010 from what MS is saying now.

The people on here against Vista are usually the ones stuck in time and refuse to join the rest of the world here in 2009.

    OK...let the flaming begin......
  10. I meant that I dont need a new monitor. srry :)

Thats what I thought about Vista....... 7 will be very late lol
