Need to reset to factory but cannot get to start up menu

My father who suffers from memory loss, cannot remember his password. I do believe the only choice we have now is to reset it to factory?? I am of course unable to get to the startup menu, and he has also misplaced everything that came with the computer. Cant even find the cd's.

If you can boot into safe mode (F8) during startup, select safe mode with networking to connect to Internet, you may be able to find some windows password recovery software, that actually works, without having to pay for it.
