I am looking to spend £370-420 on a graphics card (it could be two along they are Nvidia cards in sli) that would give the best performance on a 1920x1080 or 1680x1050 in games like crysis and other such demanding games please suggest the make as well eg asus or bfg

With that amount of money, you could afford two nVida GTX 280's and run them in SLI. They would give flawless gaming at those resolutions in most games including crysis.

What are the rest of your system specifications?

um ive been looking over fps charts and would a 4870x2 be better?
specs -Q6600 3GHZ , 4GB RAM , 2x8800 GTS 512 (i know the processors a little weak but in games like crysis it doesnt matter so much what CPU you have also as its fairly decent as its such a GPU focused game).

also what kind of performance increase would i see over my old cards? in things like crysis

I wouldn't do anything with that cpu. You need at least a hexa-core cpu to run current gen games.

Had a quick flick through a few UK sites and the best seems to be a pair of GTX275s', if you shop around they can be yours for a shade under 400 pounds.
Scan, CCL, Overclockers, Misco, Ebuyer and Pixmania are a few places to look. Have fun;)
Oh, and they should blow even Crysis out of the water at 1920x1200:)

but arent a pair of 275s just a 295 ? and also either are about 400-450 whereas a 4870x2 is 330-350 is the 295 really worth it? how much extra performance do you get i have seen there is some but this seems to go with AA as apparently ATI are better optimised for AA which i would like to play with so to sum up which is better?

Looks like nobody else is listening, mate.
The HD4870X2 is about equal to the GTX260 in SLI, making both a fair bit slower than the other Nvidia soloutions, but it is getting stupidly cheap:

The 275SLI/295 are, indeed about equal in both performance and, depending on where you shop, price.
But, with that CPU I would suggest a less powerful upgrade: Either 2 GTX260 in SLI or a single HD4870X2, I think any more would be wasted.

so the extra fps the 295 does offer up would lost (because of the CPU)? i think out of my options i will go for the 4870x2 because it a toms benchmark test it actually beat a 295GTX for fps in crysis after AA was enabled on all resolutions tested and because no crossfire/SLI is required it cuts out a lot of problems. Also what kind of improvement in performance will i see from replacing my 8800 GTS's with a 4870x2?; bearing in mind i am a huge FPS fan so CPU doesn't really come into it that much (and any how Q6600 seems to do well on World in Conflict max settings suppose quads are better for RTS's)

The CPU has quite an influence on total framerate: After all it is the CPU that feeds the GPU/s with data.
There should be a nice increase in frames but the real gains will be in minimum framerates, particularly in busy firefights and at high resoloutions, where the 512Mb memory of the 8800 will be a handicap.

cool sounds great because with my current 8800 gts x2 SLI i get an average of 30 but with some large dips in some levels of crysis also so i can imagine i can play it at higher resolutions eg 1680x1050 does look nice but doesnt run well at the mo too many fps nose dives in battles
