sup everyone, lets see where to begin, well first off im new to the computer building community, so bare with me, ill go ahead and tell you what im using now, its a 05 dell xps gen 4, intel pentium 4 550, chipset i925X, bought it from dell about 4 and a half years ago, paid 2.5k for it <_< and after this time its starting to wear out, so i figured instead of paying for a built one, id build one to my liking, so far i have a decent idea of what i want, mainly a gaming computer, but i want it to be able to do everything, much like the dell im using now which btw ive NEVER had any problems with up until recently it completely failed to play assassins creed <_<, so yeah, heres what ive so far picked out for my first build

and again bare with me im not the most knowledgable in the subject but im learning, and im not planning on overclocking, so if you guys could just help me out and point me towards something affordable my budget is anywhere from 500-1.3k and im prefered to intel/Nvidia, since thats what my dell already uses and its been great all these years.

Well, I'll try whip up a quick Phenom II build, they're the best value for gaming at this moment.
Also, the ram you pick will depend on motherboard, and the 1000W psu is total overkill for just about everything.

Given that you are willing to spend up to $1300 on the system, I'm betting that people will recommend a Core i7 system.
This system will save you a good deal of $$ over an i7 rig, though, and is a better deal.

If you wanted to make this setup more powerful, change the 650W corsair to a 750W Corsair, and add a second 4870. That would bring total to $1069.

Ok I guess I should explain my builds. If you subtract the Vista 64 bit os it brings the price of those builds down by $100. You didn't state whether you had an os or not, and if your going to game Vista 64 is the obvious choice of os. Even though you stated you weren't planning on over clocking I added an after market heatsink to both builds seeing how stock intel heatsinks blow big time. Also that leaves you the option to over clock later on if you change your mind.

That i7 build is set up to add another gtx 260 later on in the future if you choose to run two of those cards in SLI. That 750w psu will do just fine for that. Also the WD 640 32mb HD is not far behind the WD raptors as far as speed goes, and they are a lot cheaper. No need to blow your money on hardware that's not going to be that much of an improvement.

could save ~$20 shipping and buy from a lower base price for the case here: http://shop1.frys.com/product/5361898
thats is the OP doesnt mind purchasing from other places and ground shipping.

OP, do you want longevity (4-cores)? there is good deal for Phenom II 3.0 http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=10009843

On slickdeals, there is a sale by dell for intel CPU's and BFG video cards.
http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?t=1302849
with that, Why_Me's 1st build could be potentially lowered by 30ish dollars

That Phenom II is AM2+. The 4th core won't add much performance, especially for gaming. Not worth the extra cost in my opinion.

Also, that is an amazing sale dell is having.

in my first post i put my brand new build, that i compiled using the data you guys have submited let me know what you guys think :)

Out of curiosity darksoldier...what is the size and screen resolution of your monitor ? ...also Nvidea chipset boards = not good.

If you you plan on using this PC for a long time like the Dell...I would stick with the i7 build. Now that i7 can be beefed up with a Corsair 850w psu and one gtx 275 now, and that would leave you the option of adding another one later on if you choose so you can run them in SLI. A Corsair 850w or even an Antec 850w will run two of those cards in SLI with power to spare. But you do not want to use an Nvidea chipset board.

desktop>rightclick>properties>settings Find something that looks like 800 by 600
what ever those 2 numbers are, they are your current resolution.
for size... get a ruler and measure the diagonal.
or you could use Pythagorean theorem or search the model number of the monitor on google.
