My friend is currently running an AM2 Motherboard on a compaq, which means he can't change cpus or overclock. I have suggested to him that he buy a new motherboard, and use his old CPU until he can afford a new one. My question is: If he buys an AM3/AM2+/AM2 motherboard, will he be able to support ddr3 ram? and will he be able to take full advantage of a Phenom II? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I was looking for some AM3/AM2+/AM2 and only two support DDR3, the problem: Is not a good brand and maybe don't support the Phenom II, the others (ASUS, MSI, GIGABYTE) only support DDR2.

Advice? There are two options:

The problem, when he want upgrade the memory to DDR3, also has to upgrade the mobo.

Thanks for the advice. My fault, but I forgot to mention he needs a micro atx board. But thanks for the advice, I'll tell him what you put here.
