I am trying to determine whether I have a bad motherboard. I have about 4-5 more days left to RMA this thing If I want. I am running an AsRock x58 Extreme Mobo w/Intel Core i7 920.
My problem is that occasionally, my motherboard locks up when I try to enter the BIOS. The POST screen distorts and everything is frozen. This does not happen every time and I can usually get past it by cycling power or worst case, clearing the CMOS. Could this be a hardware problem or could it be the BIOS. I have tried both the default and most recent BIOS's versions and have experienced this problem.
To my knowledge, this problem has never happened with default BIOS settings, only with some minor overclocked settings. The solution may be that I should not overclock but that is not very palatable to me.
Has anyone else had a similar problem?
I honestly don't plan to go into the BIOS very often but it makes me nervous about the overall reliability of the board. I have submitted a similar question to AsRock tech support but really am unsure whether they will give me an adequate response.
I'd send it back. No time to really troubleshoot and how confident would you be that it wouldn't come up again?
And my advice when returning product is to always get a refund. This way, even if you order the same product again, you've made sure to start a new clock running for warranty, returns, etc... You can usually get around any re-stocking fee by showing that the product is defective and claiming disgust with getting another one and going thru it all over again if it's bad.
Locking up on entering BIOS is a new one for me and not sure why any settings that the system is stable with would cause this.

Yeah I kind of hate to do that but you are right that that is the safest course of action. I went ahead and RMAed it. Time to prepare for installing that Scythe Mugen 2 for the fourth time. I'm going to be an expert soon.
I've got a Scythe Katana on my AMD Phenom II - very happy with it.
I just got an RMA for what seemed to be a very nice Cable Modem, the Motorola SB6120 with 1G Net adapter. But I kept having drops of DNS and what Windows calls WinSock Provider errors. I'd like to test it more by swapping out with the other modem to make sure my ISP isn't having problems lately - but the time needed to change the MAC addresses back and forth thru tech support makes it too difficult. So I'm returning it - tonite I'll find out if I wasted my time when I put the old one back on.
