Hey i have a dell inspiron 531 with a 300 watt power supply and i want to get the ATI 4670 graphics card and i was wondering if anyone knows if a dell inspiron 531 can upgrade to 400 watt? If so, i just install both the 400 watt and the card and everything runs fine? or is there another component with i could be missing which would not allow me to use the card?, my dell supports pci express cards too. Thanks
The 4670 runs off the power from the PCI-E slot, so chances are it would run without the power supply upgrade. I installed in my wifes computer, a athlon x2 system with a 350 watt PS, and I haven't even seen a hint of power issues. As far as I know though dell ditched proprietary power supplies on on there standard desktops when the pentium 4 came out. I replaced the power supply in my old P4 2.8 GHZ dell years ago with no problems. GOOD LUCK!

Should be fine, however if you do in the future want to upgrade the PSU make sure you get a high quality unit. Because if the PSU it could take some components with it. Quality brands are like Corsair, Antec, PC Power Cooling, SeaSonic, etc.
