All the rage for HDD's are with the new WD Raptor! I'm just wondering how many people have already got their own Raptor now. I know I've got mine, two of them in a RAID 0 array and I'm lovin it!
Raptor Rampage
Thank you Western Digital!
It would be nice to get Raptors in RAID-0, but I can't afford them.

Im going to get one here pretty soon.
My current drive setup is fine thank you. I may get something faster with my next upgrade.
All the things I really like to do are either illegal, immoral, or fattening.
They are way to expensive for the storage you get... they have to triple the HD space before I might get interested.
That is why I ordered to 800JBs to set in RAID 0.

Y'all disappointed me. First I get some criticism for putting on this poll, asking if its custom made or pre-built. You complain that this place is just for them hardcore computer enthusiasts. But when I decided to ask about the latest equipment, there doesn't seem to be anyone that owns it yet. (Other than myself)

Computer enthusiasts understand better than others that the performance may not justify the price (price/performance) and thus can make an informed decision weather it's worth it to purchase the product. Anyone can go buy the latest/greatest. Why do you think you see so many people here with 2.4C and 2500+ cpu's.
Simply put the Raptor is not worth the storage + performance / price to me (and many others, obviously).
So let me see if I got this right; instead of being hardcore enthusiasts, the people here are value enthusiasts? Trying to get the most bang for their buck? I'd like to think of myself as a hardcore enthusiast because I spend every spare penny I have on buying better and faster parts. I also try to keep up with the latest hardware releases, planning upgrade after upgrade. Even if the parts aren't available yet, I know I will get them sooner or later.
Are there any other people here with the same frame of mind that I have about computer enthusiasts? Are there any other HARDCORE computer enthusiasts here? Where can I go to find others like myself (I thought it was here)?

See, there's your answer. It's not that we don't want to buy it, more likely a case of can't afford to because of other priorities.

Dude...just cause it's out doesn't mean everybody on here is going to have it. Sure, the Saleen S7's are finally rolling off the production line and I'd love to have one, but that doesn't mean I have $400,000 sitting around to buy one with. Maybe you have your own money tree, but I haven't heard of anybody on here who does. Everything Rob just said is right. Enjoy it while you're single. Before long you find yourself married and having to justify expenses to the War Department, err, I mean, wife.

So then why are the a lot more votes for "Don't Care!" then there are for "Need to get Raptors"? Even if I couldn't afford it and wanted it, I'd vote for "Need to get Raptors". It looks more like they don't want it at all!

Maybe you should go look up hardcore in the dictionary, I don't think it will say rich early-adopter.
I "Need to get Raptors" when they cost ~$60 and there isn't a better deal until then I "Don't Care". Pretty darn happy with 2 raid-0 JBs.
I think you're confusing want with need. Besides, how do you know that it's not a case of a higher percentage of the "I don't care" people responding than the "need to get raptors" responding? This isn't exactly a statistically sound study.

I agree with you, I guess I just chose the wrong word when I first posted this poll. Although this isn't exactly a statistically sound study, its the best I can do. There aren't that many enthusiasts where I live at all, value or hardcore; so to find any enthusiasts I have to go on the Internet.

Yes I'm a hardware enthusiasts... we not only need speed, but also space, and preferably for a nice price.
The Raptor only has 1 of those 3.

Quote : You just need to buy me all the HARDCORE equipment . . . so I can be HARDCORE like you
IMO to be HARDCORE you need to be able to supply yourself with that equipment, if someone else buys it for you then he is hardcore, not you.
Quote : we not only need speed, but also space, and preferably for a nice price.
I'm willing to sacrifice a little bit of space for speed, a nice price would just be a bonus for me. Also if you got a couple Raptors in RAID 0, you get more speed and space. IMO enthusiasts would do anything for speed, including giving up some space. There are ways around not having much space, thats why CD-R's are around. Just archive data you need but don't use too often. I've got about 150 CD-R's worth of data I need but isn't on my array.

I'm not willing to buy 4 Raptors to get sufficient space... I don't have a money tree. And CD-Rs are very slow and a pain in the ass compared to HDs so that is not the way a HARDCORE tweaker goes.
And people that have to much money so they can buy everything they want although they don't know nothing about it are rich stupid bastards (I'm not saying you are one!).

Thats true about CD-Rs. But as for not having enough space, I suppose we have different views about the way a HARDCORE tweaker goes. Perhaps it depends on what they do on their computer. Some enthusiasts need space for what they do, but I don't; which is why I love the Raptor.
I agree that there are rich stupid bastards out there, at least I try my best to know what I'm getting myself into.
Quote : If you're so hardcore, why don't you buy it for him? Wouldn't that just make you more hardcore?
I would also get even more hardcore by buying myself the parts. Just because I want to be more hardcore, doesn't mean I'd buy parts for others. Since I said buying parts would make the buyer more hardcore, it would be even more so if he kept the parts! Why lose the opportunity to become even more hardcore by keeping the parts instead of giving them away?

How the hell do you know how I want to be HARDCORE? YOU AREN'T ME!!!!! I've got the space, just in a different format; CD-R's are the way I go. My first priority is speed, then space. My space is in a lot of CD-R's. Like I said before,

If I want my data fast, I can easily add it into my array. But for the data I hardly use, they are burnt. If you're so HARDCORE, how fast can you move data in your HDD? Are you running a RAID 0 array? I've got two of the fastest desktop drives in the world working as one! Can you say the same? I didn't think so.

Faster on paper, yes. Faster in everday use? Not likely. Servers have had 10 000 rpm drives for years... the only reason your average Joe Blow doesn't have these drives is because the performance 'gain' doesn't equate to the hole it leaves in the pocket book.
You drives will be faster, depending on what you use them for. How much faster? Not enough for me to justify the extra expense of owning them. If you can afford to blow money like that; more power to ya. Most of us have other things that must take priority over having the latest hardware for our computers.
From Maximum PC:
Quote : There’s just one catch: The Raptor’s caching algorithm was never designed to tackle desktop work, so desktop drives like the 180GXP have a chance to “cache” up in many pedestrian desktop applications. SYSmark2002 testing proves this point, as both the 180GXP and Raptor had identical scores of 166 in the more disk-intensive Office portion of this benchmark. The results left us concerned because the Raptor is fast. We even considered the possibility that our aging test bed was holding the Raptor back. Regardless, SYSmark2002 does tell us something about how a faster hard drive affects real-world performance: Pedestrian desktop activities just don’t hit your disk that often. That said, if you do more disk-intensive work than what’s scripted in SYSMark2002, you will definitely see a speed jump. Video-editing, file-serving, and even game loading speeds should improve.
So basically if you use apps that thrash the drive, you'll notice a big difference. If you don't, you're not going to notice anything. In other words... I wouldn't notice enough of a difference in speed for me to justify upgrading. You may be different... I can't speak for you; but by the same token, you can't speak for the rest of us. I spent just over $2000 on my new computer (wholesale and only one sales tax)... that was pretty much the maximum I could afford. The money would have been better spent elsewhere, obviously, but I wanted a really decent machine to run Doom 3, HL 2, etc.

I am to, even though my hardware isnt the absoulte fastest and newest. but i am more concerned about Speed Rather than capacity. and i dont think anyone has the fastest/newest hardware for long, cause right after you buy it, they always comeout with something newer and faster.
Edit, I forget price is a concern also.

A raptor would be nice... but ATM its a 'want', not a 'need'.
The performance boost is good, but at too great a loss in capacity and too high a price.
