More about smart utility diagnose issue
  1. Is it your system drive and you are unable to boot, or is it another hard drive that isn't system critical?

    http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/seatools

This link has diagnostics for both in-windows use as well as a bootable format. (Maxtor was bought by Seagate so the software should be relevant).
  2. I used "seatools in dos", had to burn the image onto CD and booted the PC from it and did a fews tests, with my HDD problem it didnt fix anything yours it might work. The program checks for bad sectors and fixes them.

  6. No problem and just agreeing/adding to what "Genericuser" was saying, hope it solves your problem and also that your HDD isnt about to crash.
