So I'm building a system for my buddy, who will be playing some games with minimal requirements. The Mobo I got comes with a ATI Radeon HD 3200. However, I also have an old GeForce 6800 lying around from a few years ago before I replaced it with a 8800 GTS, then later a 280. I digress, Would the 6800 out perform the 3200 due to it being a Independent GPU? I would think so, even if it is much older, but I figured it couldn't hurt to ask around. The 6800 ran WoW, Oblivion, and CS at playable framerates.

It might depend on which 6800 we are talking about. If its the 6800XT, there is a good chance they are equals. If its a 6800GT, the GT is probably faster for gaming. If he is more into watching movies, then the onboard is probably better due to newer/better video play back technology.

Try it both ways and see? Its not like your out any money.

The 6800 should generally come out on top, so long as it's at least the GS model. Of course the 3200 is better for movies, especially HD movies, so if you're going to put a blu-ray drive or something in there then the 3200 is better. If all he's gonna be doing is watching DVDs then any dual core CPU should be fine with the additional load.

The 3200s DVXA for HD video content is way better than the 6800.
