You don't really have to format the drive, but if the drive contains the operating system and you expect to boot it on the new motherboard then chances are the OS on the drive won't have the right hardware drivers available and it won't work.

In that case you'd need to "repair" or reinstall the OS. You can do with with or without formatting the drive.
