amd = phenom II, everything else is crap.
intel = core2 or i7.

theyre all good, i7 is better for some things (not so much gaming, but other stuff... like transcoding. mostly applications and not games.)

When you spend a LOT of money on a graphics card like the gtx 295 you might as well go for Intel's Core i7 especially the 920.AMD doesn't have a CPU that can match the performance of Intel's Core i7 line.So trying to compete with the Core i7 920 in terms of performance won't be matched by AMD's quads.However AMD does have quad cores that make great budget or mid range gaming systems at around the $800 and under price point.In this circumstance it can be very viable.
Here is one such deal right now amongst some others.The combo deals on AMD's fastest quad the 3.2 Ghz Phenom II X4 955 BE and motherboards sold so quickly that the CPU is now sold out at newegg.However their next fastest one the 3.0 Phenom II X4 945 still has some combo deals available.Here is one deal.
1. JETWAY JMA3-79GDG-LF: $94.99
JetWay JMA3-79GDG-LF AM3/AM2+/AM2 AMD 790GX HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail
2. AMD HDX945FBGIBOX: $179.00
AMD Phenom II X4 945 Deneb 3.0GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 125W Quad-Core Processor - Retail

Combo Discount: -$70.00
Combo Price: $203.99

For the i7, just get the i7 920, unless you have the cash for the EE and absolutely need the bragging rights. The 920 overclocks amazingly well, and is a great value - the 950 isn't really worth the extra cash.

What socket fits the Intel Core i7? can anyone explain which motherboard suitable for it

The 975 isn't worth it IMO. I returned it to fry's a day before the 15 day return policy was about to expire and picked up another 920. It doesn't overclock to 4.8Ghz like the 975 did but 4.2 is MORE then enough

funny you should mention this. Cleeve just wrote an article about this. Go to the Tomshardware hompage and check out the article.

The only boards that fit the i7 are the X58 boards with the LGA1366 socket.
