I currently have an XP PC connected to the internet via a router. I need to connect another PC.
Since the router is in another room and I can't add an additional cat5, can I connect both PC's to a switch and then connect the switch to the router?
Thanks!

You could connect wirelessly by adding an access point to the router.

A switch will require another Cat5 cable.

Yes connect both to the Switch and than the Router. But you still need a cable to connect the PCs, or do what lyleb said and go wireless but, does your router support wireless? Its much cheaper to make or, buy a CAT5e cable than a new router. Why can't you add additonal cat5?

What he probably meant by being unable to add additional cables is that he already ran cables through walls and don't want to do it again. So yes, you can add a switch, plug both PCs in the switch and the switch's uplink to the router, it will work just fine. Note that both computer will share the same "bandwidth" to the router (which is probably not an issue unless you have very high traffic).
