Can someone explain the difference between DDR-I and DDR memory and why DDR-I will not work in my computer. I have a PC CHIPS M848A motherboard.

As far as I know of, there is no such thing as DDR-I RAM. Where did you see it listed? Did you buy RAM listed as DDR-I - if so, give full details of mfg and part number.

Your motherboard uses DDR 400 (PC-3200) RAM or slower. You can find it at many sources still - although it tends to cost more than newer RAM per GB. Here is a list of DDR 400 available from NewEgg.com
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010170147%201052107965%201052407862&name=DDR%20400%20%28PC%203200%29

Your max installed RAM is 2GB - and you have 2 slots. There are no 2GB modules in DDR so this means you'd get 2 1GB modules to max it out.

All I can think is that the voltages required are wrong for your MB's default, but from memory ddr-400 was pretty fault tolerant when it came to voltages. Still, worth a try if your bios will let you adjust voltages.

Me either, but long-shots are just that.

Other option for the OP is to RMA the ram.
