:hello:

I need some advice to find a good CPU air cooler that won't hang over my RAM slots. :??:
My current config is:

*Asus P8P67 PRO
*Intel Core I7 2600k
*Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600MHz CL8

That RAM has *huge* heat spreaders, but it's the only one I could find (in the UK) running at 1.5V when I bought the parts. I was originally aiming for a Noctua D14, but there's no way I can make it fit with those modules. I'm only using slots 2 and 4 now, but will probably buy additional modules in the future, so ideally it should be something that doesn't interfere at all with any of the slots (I know, it's not easy!).

I don't have strong height restrictions, since my case is a Corsair 600t, which is as big as a hangar.

Ideally I would like something that runs reasonably quiet. I'm only planning to do moderate overclocking, and anything will be an improvement over the stock fan, which is rubbish, but I'd like this processor to last for a while!

So far, the only viable choice seems to be one of the Corsair water-cooling solutions (the H70 most likely) but I'm not too happy about buying something that is twice as expensive, equally noisy and less efficient than an equivalent air cooler. If there aren't any other good solutions the H70 will have to do... :(

Am I asking the impossible? :(

Thanks in advance!!

I would buy a Thermalright Archon it has a quiet 140mm(21 db) fan and is only 55mm wide.
Because of it's width it doesn't overhang dimms this however makes it 170mm tall.
It's defintely one of the best air coolers available and can perform as well if not better then the Silver Arrow and D14.

Just checked your case specs 10.6 inches wide it would fit no problem.

Wow that looks fantastic, and I can even find it in the UK! Thanks!!!!!!! :)
I need to check the width to make sure it will stay away from my graphics card, but it does look so.

I was also having a look at this Zalman:

But even this one may be a tight fit (heatpipes) and I think the performance is a bit worse...

Thanks a lot for the advice! :)

Edit: sorry I can't select your answer as the best one, I forgot to specify this was a question rather than a discussion when I created the thread... silly me! :(
