Hi, my 1st post as you can see.

Im thinking of building my own PC, this is my 1st go at it so got a few questions.

How easy is it? im no expert but ive upgraded my PC in the past, new hds, dvd-roms, ram, psus and gfx cards. Ive looked into what i want and i know all my parts are compatabile.

Im building a gaming system, getting a i7 920, 6gb ddr3 ram and probably a 4890gfx card.

Im unsure about what case to get, ive been looking at the Antec 1200 and the Coolermaster HAF 932. Which of these would be the better case or would there be cheaper options?

Also how easy would it be for me to overclock, ive read that it isnt as hard as it once was?

Thanks.

there isn't much point in getting the 1200 anymore since the XClio Blackhawk is a modified copy of it and costs about the same as a 900.

The rc-690/antec 902 aswell are good cases.

What would be your budget on this system?

And what size monitor/brand do you have already?

Reply to fullmetall

Im looking at spending about £1200, can go a bit over if need be. At the mo i have a 19" Packard Bell, it isnt great tbh 1400x900, i will be looking at getting a bigger monitor at some stage. I dunno if its worth going for a Blu-Ray drive? I have a PS3 so will watch Blu-Rays on that.

you can buy a neat i7 with that amount:

where do you buy from? overclockers? scan?

Reply to fullmetall

id probably go ebuyer, they seem to be the cheapest. would the 1gb4890 be a god choice?

Reply to E17_Hammer

Yea for ati, 4890 is top single card.

unless you'd like to stick with 4870's, vapor x 4870 2gb edition is nice.

Reply to fullmetall

would ati be better than nvida? also would a 750 psu be enough?

Reply to E17_Hammer

the ati 4890's are better than the GTX 275 overall but at stock the GTX 275's win.

and for a single card 650w would be enough, if dual cards you'll probably want 850w+

Reply to Helloworld_98

ok ill have to make my choice then, im looking at this motherboard "ASUS P6T SE iX58 Socket 1366 8 Channel Audio ATX Motherboard" is this a good one?

Reply to E17_Hammer

4890's are good for overclocking, they can reach limits the 275/4870 1gb can't.

There a power hungry card for sure, i mean comon, its amd/ati.

1 card = 650tx.

2 cards = 850tx.

2 gtx 285's can probably run off a 850tx. if not, a hx 1000w corsair.

Ok thanks for the reply, is that motherboard i mentioned any good?

Reply to E17_Hammer

Any p6t asus will be worth the buy, best recommended is the P6T v2.

Reply to fullmetall

Ok ive been looking into it a bit more and ive found out that the motherboard i want supports 1600(O.C) ram, i was gonna buy 1600 and not the 1333. Ive found out that that motherboard wont support standard 1600 and that it will only support overcloked ram at 1600, is this correct? If so does the v2 support standard 1600 as it dont list what speeds it supports on ebuyer? Also will there be much differance between the two speeds?

Thanks.

Reply to E17_Hammer

they all should support 1600 but, run at a lower clock, you have to manually change the voltages to run it at standard 1600.

v2 deluxe is a good choice for overclocking

Reply to fullmetall

Do i even have to change it manually for the v2? also is that easy to do as i have no exp of overclocking.

thanks.

Reply to E17_Hammer

It's not hard to learn overclocking at all, the number of websites varies.

Youtube even has many video's of setting your computer up, overclocking, etc.

the p6t v2 can run all the way up to 2000 oc'd.

it would probably be a standard 1333 then you would have to oc your ram.

Reply to fullmetall

ok thanks, i still dont understand why they sell 1600 if the motherboard dont see it as standard?

Reply to E17_Hammer

It's Intel, amd would be able to see what ever they have standard showing and can oc from there.

Intel on the other hand, gives you the option to run low clock/standard/high clock.

Reply to fullmetall

ok so as im going for intel woluld it be better to buy the 1333 as its slightly cheaper and oc from there? what advantages would the 1600 have if i have to change the settings anyway?

sorry for all the questions just i wanna be sure on what im doing/buying/

thanks.

Reply to E17_Hammer

at a mhz of 1600 your cl is at 7, you will get a good performance.

Im sure you will get the same with 1333 but, with the price 1600mhz can be i would get it.

Reply to fullmetall

yeah there isnt much of a price change between the two, i was looking at cosair but ive seen ocz is supposed to be better, ive seen the ocz gold, is there much differance between the two?

Reply to E17_Hammer

CL(Cas Latency)

The OCZ Platinum DDR3 1600 is probably your best bet on 1600mhz
CL:7-7-7-24

heres a list of 2 good ocz products in the ddr3-1600 and ddr3 1333 range.

DDR3 1333

DDR3 1600

Reply to fullmetall

ok thanks for all the help. ill probs go for the ocz gold now.

Reply to E17_Hammer

You sure you want CL of 8 over the ocz platinums which are CL of 7?

Reply to fullmetall

rhey dont have the plat on ebuyer, can i buy from newegg as im in the uk? ill look on scan and see if they have the plat.

Reply to E17_Hammer

oh, if you can find any good brand memory at 7-7-7-x your good, the 8-8-8-24 is a little loose, not to much, could still get the gold if you wanted to.

Reply to fullmetall

does it make much of a differance from cl7 to cl8? ill try to shop around, both overclockers and scan also dont have the plat version only the gold. also on the overclocking front would you recomend upping it to 1600? also what about the processor, would it be safe to overclock and leave the comp on for long periods of time?

Reply to E17_Hammer

IF your going to oc the i7 make sure your aftermarkey cooler is atleast a s1283v.

As said before, your going to get a better oc with the 1600.

Reply to fullmetall

Looks pretty,hopefully not to big.

Reply to fullmetall

ive managed to find some of the platinum ocz on another site, how much will i notice between cl8 and cl7?
