Windows wont load with a 2.5" SATA drive hooked up

Hello,
I'm having some difficulty figuring out my issue here. I have a few 2.5" SATA hard drives iv removed from friends laptops to attempt to recover files from. I have a normal 700BG SATA drive I was just using for storage that I unhooked and just plugged in the 2.5" SATA drive, but when I turn my computer back on, windows 7 never loads completely with either of the 2.5" SATA drives... Whats the difference between the 2.5" SATA drive and a normal sized one. I thought they were the same only different in size.

Use an external enclosure (Blacx from Thermaltake are extremely convenient like that, look it up online) and retrieve the data from there via USB.
