Hard drive checks

My computer is doing random hard drive checks on a blue screen then my computer automatically restarts and I loose all my work. Why is it doing this? How can I fix it?

try scanning for bad sectors

What should I use?

in windows:
1- R-click the drive
2- properties
3- tools
4- error checking
5- check "automatically fix system errors"

NB: if a message says " it can't chek now, do you want to schedule on the next startup, say "yes" & restart
