I see both for sale, and my Gigabyte motherboard has ports for both, but is one preferred to the other? Are motherboards going away from PS/2?

As they are both wired it is up to you to choose which one appeals to you the most, some boards do not have any ps2 connectors at all like Asus for instance, and others will accept whichever is plugged into the ps2 plug.:)

I've seen computers and motherboards that no longer have PS/2 connectors, but OTOH I've also seen computers that don't work with USB keyboards and mice. At least they don't work until you boot into Windows and the drivers kick in, so operating the BIOS and so forth would never work. The ASUS motherboard I had at home would not work with USB so I had to keep an old PS2 keyboard around for it.
