Hi guys,

I have just installed an amd3 phenom x2 550 cpu into my m3n78-vm motherboard.Mobo has latest bios update. From what I understand the am2+ boards will support am3 cpu's with the correct bios. 2 x 800 hz 2g corsair ram for memory. System boots into windows fine. After about 10 mins pc freezes completely. I have dual screen and am running wow and google chrome on them.Gpu is gtx 260.

Any ideas on how to get to stop freezing would be greatly appreciated.:) I have been researching for a while now and haven't come up with anything, and yes I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to building systems. That said thermal grease has been applied properly and Zalman 9900 fan installed as it should be. Maybe I should try the stock fan?

Any how, thanks in advance!

well, two things, do you have the (i think) 1009 BIIOS version and is your PCB v1.02

BIOS is 1009 ,but PCB,to be honest not even sure what that is.Can it be upgraded?

In short, no.

In long, the PCB is the printer circuit board that the components of the mobo sits on, it CAN be upgraded with parts, soldering iron and solder, prayer to Mohammad, Jesus and Buddha (in no particular order, just not all at the same time) while offering a human sacrifice to a Mayan god.

O and to check PCB version you need to look at the board it self and see if it's printed on there, or if they use a cryptic version of that by using strange numbers and letters that can only be decoded by someone in the know.

Well considering I'm not relgious and not in the know,I could be screwed.Heh. Perhaps a new mo bo is in order.

Any sugestions on a better cpu for this board? I am currently using an amd 7750 be but find it bottlenecks the gpu.Something that runs at 3 ghz would be nice. I use this system for gamng and video quite a bit. Thanks for the replies.:)

well according to their website, that boards supports only "AMD Socket AM2+/AM2 for Phenom/ Athlon 64 X2 / Athlon 64 FX / Athlon 64 / Sempron / AM2+" which means that it is not a drop-in ready mobo for AM3, maybe it is best to pick up on some of the Ph II + mobo deals at newegg (if you can get it) or something if you want better, buying AM2+ now would mean that it is the end of the line for that computer.

And you would have the DDR2 ram and video card to go with that mobo (get DDR2, not DDR3 eh) and then you would be gtg.

a nice cheap new CPU is Ph II x2 550 BE (unlockable to X4 or 4 cores if you get good batch with good mobo).

but if you want end of line AM2+, I don't know any that are good on there since Ph I suppose to be *** as AMD had issues with them (the early stuff any ways, don't quote me on this since I have no clue on those days)

Also, as a last resort, since you say it works for some time and not others, it can be seen as a stability issue and that the CPU's voltage and a host of other stuff is not set automatically.

So you gota find the CPU's native HTT speed, the voltages it runs on, disable cool and quiet, disable any other random crap you don't need like any power saving crap, set the multiplier to default, and see what happens, since the thing runs maybe it is simply a config issue and not a non working issue. this may or may not fix your issue since it is not rated for AM3 and the reports is that AM3 will simply not function in a AM2 machine (not boot on or stuck at boot on with CPU ID stage) and your case of working for 10 minutes is already very much strange...

EDIT: o wait you got a Ph II X2 550? Or is that some Ph I 550??? If it is a II X2 then just pick up a cheap AM3 DDR2 mobo.

Cheers for the help! It is a PhII X2 550,from what I have read, the AM2+ boards will support AM3 with correct BIOS. Thats just what I've read anyways. The first time I booted it was stable for about 40 mins then each time after it froze it became less and less. The pc did recognize model and clock speed of chip. Will try checking the config at startup and if I cant seem to stabilze then will look at a new mobo. Once again thanks so much for your help:) Now to see what I can do.

well when they said am2+ will support am3, they meant that newer boards that were made in am2+ era, you board was made in the am2 era, and added am2+ support via bios updates.

i still have no clue as how the hell did you get that to work for even 1 second.....
