Hey guys

I have just built my new system as follows and when playing Raibow six vegas i get FPS between 12fps and 30fps (using Fraps) with settings maxed AAx 8 and AFx16. I'm just worried that i haven't even got games like Crysis or Far Cry 2 yet and my new system is already struggling on a game that came out along time ago.

I don't know whether it is because i have a 32bit system with all of that memory or i am expecting too much of the card at that resolution. I could get another 4870 1GB but i don't perticularly what to have to spend the money on another one and a PSU upgrade. I am planning on getting Windows 7 64bit when it come out so 32bit wont be a problem.

Should i get another 4870 1GB and run it in crossfire or shall i see how it goes with windows 7 when i get it?

Processor: Intel Core2 Duo CPU E8400 @ 3.00GHz (2 CPUs)

Monitor: Samsung T240
Sound Card: Realtek HD Audio output
Operating System: Windows XP Professional 32 bit
Motherboard: Gigabyte EP45-UD3P

PSU: Coolermster xtreme power duo 650watt

The 4870 should be fine for the games you want to play. At the resolution you're playing at i would lower the AA and AF a little and see if that helps. AA usually cuts down FPS a decent amount. If lowering it bothers you and you're going to want to play FC2 and Crysis at close to Max settings running another 4870 in crossfire would probably help in most new games.

Thanks for the reply, i changed the settings in the catalyst control so that AF and AA were set to application settings and it rarely went below 20fps but it still felt sluggish

AA and AF are really gonna stress your video card at that resolution. Adding another 4870 and lowering the AA and AF will help. The only thing is, if you add another 4870 you'll loose another 1GB of address space thus leaving your OS to use less than 2GB of RAM, so I'd recommend getting a 64-bit OS for that :D.

Wow, 8X AA, no wonder you are having problems....I have a GTX 295 I7 920 and in FarCry 2 if I put 8X AA on it drops my FPS to about 50-55 with it on 2X I get 90 average so LOWER your AA settings to about 2X and enjoy!!! I also run the samsung 2493HM 24" monitor at 1920X1200

at 2x AA 4x AF it gets between 60fps and 30fps

do you think it is worth getting another card or just leave it and lower the settings?

At that resolution i wouldn't even go over like 2 aa af. Your fps is low becuase aa af really strains the alivable ram on the card which is taken up by the screen size.

Thanks for all of your replys but one last question?

Is it worth getting another 4870 1GB and a PSU upgrade for the games i'm gonna get?

Crysis, Far Cry 2, GRID, COD4

Again thanks for all of the replys

If you do think it's a good idea could you recommend some PSU's which are good for crossfire with the 4 6pin connctors

^^^He already posted a link to a great reference for top quality PSUs. Also Google is your best friend, simply type "PSU guide" in the search bar, and pull up the top three or four websites and read through them. You will benefit more from doing some of your own actual research than us doing it for you. They're a lot of great PSUs to chose from, but there are even more bad quality ones. Once you figure out the difference, go to Newegg.com or your favorite online retailer and look for the best deals on the good quality PSUs. After you think you have chosen the right answer, come back to the forum and double check with the guys here with experience to make sure you made a good choice.

Yeah, the code that Crysys and some games are well, for lack of a better discription not written to take advantage of multicore cpu's, I want to get Crysys warhead, and I do have Far Cry2, it's ok, but not even close to being as good as COD 4, That game ROCKS, I play online most of the time. I hear GTA 4 is a beast for most systems, don't have that one, I prefer FPS and Fighter Sims actually, think I am gonna get a good joystick and get some newer Sims to play on my gamer.

Far Cry 2 is fun...to a point.......it gets redundant, I mean you have cleared a post and come back to it and it's remanned and rearmed!! it's redundant, but the grafix are good and it can stress your system. but COD 4 is better by 10 fold, I love that game and the online is totally AWESOME!!! :bounce: :bounce: I want Crysis To totally stress my system, I have heard it will bring even the I 7 and gtx 295 to it's knees!! I do know FarCry 2 at 8X aa and all maxed out on all setting will have my system running it at about 50-60 FPS average, thats tough!! coz on 2X AA and it runs at 90+ FPS on a 24" samsung at 1920X1200 and it looks AMAZING!!! :D :D

Here is my system running FarCry Benchmark tool!
