Is it legitimate to compare laptop CPU to a Desktop's

Hello,

As many people proably know (or not) I ma doing this science fair thingy. I picked up a single core LE-1640 2.7GHZ AM2 processor. But they didn't have the 4850e dual core in until next week. Thats when my tests have to be. So can i use the AMD and compare it to my friends Intel Dual Core T3400 2.2GHZ laptop CPU? The guy at the computer store said they are about the same??!

Clock 2200MHZ (I think it may be o/c slightly)
Dual Core
1MB L2 Cache
I don't know what socket for a laptop lol.

So final question, is it legit to compare these together? Here is my earlier post.

PS. I can't buy anything online, only at the local tech shops.

At similar clock speeds you can do some comparisons. I don't know how that AM CPU would compare but in the Intel world you could compare desktop and laptop within reason. There are faster CPU's available for desktop use because it isn't quite as important how much power they use. Similarly there are more quadcores used in desktops because of the higher power use.

In mainstream laptops, a high performance CPU is usually a dual core at 2.4-2.8GHz. My own Dell has a 2.53GHz processor. But for my desktops I have one E8500 at 3.8GHz and one Q9400 at 3.4GHz. You can buy specialty laptops with the faster processors but don't try to use them for long on battery power.

I'm not sure that's a fair comparison. If you were going to compare AMD architecture to Intel architecture then it would only be fair to get a dual core or single core setup for each with the same clock speed and to try and make everything else identical. If you're comparing dual core vs single core then it would be best to compare that LE-1640 to an Athlon X2 5200 which also runs at 2.7GHz.

Thanks megamanx00, you helped me alot. The thing is I can't even play 1080p without dopping to 5-12FPS lol. I've decided to compare it with a 4850e even though it'll be a bit lol. So would this be fair? A 4850e 65nm 2.5Ghz X2 vs a Lima 2.7Ghz Single?
