A couple of weeks ago my computer started gfx glitching a lot, booting in vga mode etc. So I took it into the shop, they 'traced the fault' to the gfx card and replaced my 8800gtx with a gtx 260.
Everything was pretty much ok for the past week, but then booting in VGA mode started again with the gfx card showing a fault in the device manager.
I've been getting by for the weekend by uninstalling and reinstalling the gfx card drivers, everything seems to work ok for the session - but upon reboot I'm back in vga mode and have to redo the process.
I've done this today 3 times. Now, everything appears to be ok - graphics card showing no problems in device manager, resolution correct etc, but upon loading any game the computer locks up and needs a reboot.
Weird problems and I've no idea what to do next.
I've had a look through the dxdiag report and can't see anything much wrong

What are the rest of your specs? CPU, memory, MB, PSU-maker, model and output on the +12v line/s and OS.
Which fault in Device Manager?
First off reset your BIOS to defaults and undo any overclock then make sure Windows is fully updated.
Check the HDD for errors.
Do some test runs with only one stick of memory installed at a time.
Sorry for the untidy thread, think I'm hitting the character limit with my dxdiag report.
I'll try the steps you've suggested when I get back - just need to pop out for a couple of ours. Here is my system info:

OK, so I patched windows with a couple of non critical updates. When I rebooted I was back in VGA mode with an "Error 10, This device cannot Start" on the following devices:
GTX 260
nForce Network Controller
nForce network controller#2
Huh? Those should be motherboard devices surely?
Ok try reinstalling your motherboard drivers.
If you have lost or have an old install disc, go to the manufacturer website and download their latest software.
I suspect a power related problem. When a vga card goes into 3d mode, like starting a game, it will use more power.
1) What psu do you have? Look at the unit, and tell us what you see on the label. Of particular interest is the amperage on the +12v rails. What brand is it? Poor quality units do not perform as well. Is there an aux connector on the mobo to help power the pci-e slot? Surely, the 6-pin pci-e connector is firmly plugged into the vga card. Check all power connections.
2) What mobo do you have? Run cpu-z to get a simple display of your cpu, mobo, and ram specs.
3) Could you have a ram problem? Download and run memtest86+ for a full pass. There should be NO errors.
You probably did well, getting a GTX260 to replace a 8800GTX
