Is it normal for Catalyst control centre to do this when using a single 4850X2?
1)Showing one 4850 to be "Primary" and the other as "Disabled"
2)Having no crossfire option on the next side?

Also I've heard of the GPU having issues with the drivers. Is this common?

With past ATI cards iv had this has been normal, my system arrives soon got a 3850 ill see if says that, which I'm sure it will. I'm quite sure it because the card supports 2 monitors and only one is connected, so there is no need for the other output to be enabled

hope this helps

You mean to say that the Crossfire connection between the two 4850's on the X2 has crossfire on by default and can't be changed? Both the GPU's work right? Is this typical of other ATI X2 systems as well?

Right click on the ATI System Tray icon and go into Crossfire options and select Show ATI Crossfire Icon when Crossfire enabled. Than start a game. If both GPUs are working you are going to se a Transparent ATI Crossfire icon in the top right corner of your screen.

ATI Officially supports Dual GPU cards since Catalyst 9.1 drivers, so use the latest drivers from their website.

Make sure you have proper Power Supply, I would recommend you at least 650W just to be on the safe side. This card needs quite a bit power to run.

Cheers

In other words, there will be a crossfire option in any X2 card? If tehre is no option, does it mean the card is defective?

Yeah it might be that is defective or drivers haven't been installed properly, or your PSU is not providing enough power to power up the 2nd GPU.
Try powering down your system, unplugging your card, resetting BIOS, and plugging in the card again and see if your GPUs get detected.

you have to download the drivers from sapphires own website as the ati drivers didnt support the 4850x2 until the 9.4s, so i hear. but i'd still get them from the sapphire site just to be sure.

once installed you should have got an ccc screen about crossfire come up automatically and a prompt to click 'go'! if you didnt, it didnt install properly. reinstall the drivers after wiping the old ones with driver cleaner and see what happens.

Not true.

I had a hd4850x2 and it worked great with CAT 9.1 drivers. ATI had officially supported Dual GPU cards from the Catalyst 9.1 drivers.
I would install the latest drivers available from the ATI's website.

Euphore, also does yours show as "Primary aDApter" and "Linked Adaptor" for the seconf 4850? And have you ever had any issues with the drivers? And do games without profiles in the drivers work properly? I'm thinking of buying one....don't want to bbuy a dud.

I had a 1 hd4850x2 1GB card... I got it on a sale for $230 more than few months ago.
I ran every single game I had without problems. That is L4D, Crysis, COD4, COD Warfare, FarCry2, Fallout, etc.

I did not use any custom profiles for the games. THey all worked fine just with clean install of Cat 9.1.

I game at 1080p on everything maxed, and since I did not have enough cash for the HD4850x2 2GB I returned the HD4850x2 1GB and I got one HD4870 1GB from newegg for $165 (Also on sale, Love Newegg!), then I got my second hd4870 1GB three weeks ago and now I game in Crossfire.

If you play at 1920x1080 and higher I recommend you to get the HD4850x2gb instead of the 1GB version, that 1GB will be useful when loading high res textures at high res.

Thanks.....BTW is the card reliable? I mean, will the Crossfire option go phut if I format my hard drive/update my drivers? And will newer games work fine minus the custom profiles?
And I was considering the 1gig version, I play at 1024*768.

Most of the people that complain about crossfire not working, sooner or later, found out that they have the following issues:
- PSU is too week and can not provide enough power for dual GPU.
- They've messed around with RivaTunner and they've messed up registry settings so drivers wont initialize Crossfire.
- Bad airflow so card overheats.

Please note that this card is pretty big so you need to have plenty of space in your case for it to fit properly.

There is no reason for this card not to work. Sapphire would not sell something that they haven't tested properly in their lab before release. It's call Quality Assurance. They are in this business just as anyone else, to make money.

a) I dont intend to OC my card or mess with it in any way
b) I speccd a 700 watt coolermaster psu (dont remember the exact model)
c) I leave my cabinet open all the time, closing it after powering down.

Is that OK?
