Hello,
i got this message when trying to install microsoft office 77 on recently activated windows xp home edition sp3 - " Hard disk failed, This product is an update to ms office 97 professional. To use it you must own one of the qualifying products listed on ms office. It says something else about not licensed. Activation was a crack as product key was not being accepted even though it was valid and automated service was unhelpful.

You are missing something here. What exactly are you installing? The message tells you exactly what's wrong, you are installing some update to Office 97, not the actuall product. And since you don't have a valid key (if it's not taking it the key is either illegal, for the wrong product, or you typed it in wrong), you should expect issues with installing.

What exactly does the disk say that you are using?
