I finally decided to buy an EVGA GTX 260 55nm super clocked card. Now I have only but one fear, my PSU. I currently have a 480W PSU with some name "DH". My system configuration is as follows:
Intel DG33FB Motherboard
e4500 C2D
1x SATA 160GB
1x IDE 80GB HDD
1x DVD ROM Drive
1x 2G Kingston HyperX RAM
1x Philips 7134 Tv Tuner
My PSU says the following (and perhaps this is what I need to understand).
Only 18A on the 12v rail is nowhere near enough but 650W is a bit much.
Look to 500-550W from a good brand: Corsair, Seasonic, Antec, Pc Power and Cooling or OCZ.
Power supply upgrades are fairly easy, even if your case has a sucky design(damn you HP). Your power supply dedicates most of its power to the 5V rail instead of the 12V rail like most modern power supplies. Your current power supply would be cutting it close, get a good power supply, check the amperage rating on the 12V rail as that is what matters.
You will find alot of the good power supply manufacturers rate their power supplies significantly lower. For example
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6817139003 Its only listed as a 450W powersupply but it has 396 watts available on the 12V rail alone, they rate it lower than it is capable of so there is no way you will come close to its limit.
its a bit more expensive but if your PSU goes bad it can take the system down with it so its best not to get the cheapest PSU, its cheap for a reason, the antec one is only $30 more but gives you alot more power to work with.
@ MHAQS; Not bad, but it only has one PCI-E connector and the card needs two, although the card should come with an adaptor to convert Molex connectors to PCI-E.
Where are you?
I'll have to look for the antec one in the local market. I'll have to keep in mind about having twin connectors. These are my other options on my local retailer:
It all depends on the brand of the PSU though, some of them are rated higher than they should be so they can sell for more, while the good ones are rated lower than they could be so that they know you will stay within its limits, but yeah a 650 is overkill
To find out what level power supply you need plug your system specs into here
