My new Seagate ST3500418AS does not work

My new Seagate ST3500418AS does not work. Can make patition, can format it (very slow, this takes more than 6 hours). But cannot copy files onto it. When copying, an error is reported and then the disk disappears from the computer drive list! Do I need to return this Seagate hard drive?
