All XP buttons relating to audio input microphone aregreyed out and useless

XP Pro SP3 -- NO audio input - all buttons referring to audio input (microphone) are greyed out.

I mean that I can't get any of the possible microphones, hard wire, USB, Bluetooth - none of them - to detect voice. The headset speakers work fine on everything I've tried.
