Hi, my friends selling his old system parts, he has 2x2GB DDR2 800 Ram, the same as mine. Now, if I purchase these of him, and boost my system double the ram, will it REALLY gain alot of performance? Or is it just a ram overkill. Would I see any gain in the future? Even though DDR3 is becoming normal, will 8GB of DDR2 be an overkill?

Regards.

It'll only help if you're trying to run more / bigger stuff than will fit into the memory you've got. Does your system seem slow? Does the light on your disk drive flash a lot when it does? If so, you may be paging and if that's the case then the memory could help.

Use task manager to see if you've got lots of free memory when you're running the programs you typically use. If you already have lots of free memory, the extra memory probably won't help.

I would only recomend 8 gigs of ram if you are running a 64 bit operating system, with a lot of sevices running in the background, and of course if you're running a program that actually requires a LARGE amount of memory, like a server or FTP site.

It helps me when encoding or playing SOME games, i would go for it, it can't hurt.

You see, what I'm trying to say is, will games really need more then 4GB of ram in the next year or two? To be honest, I see no need of upgrading to DDR3 just yet, I'm guessing DDR3 will blow past the 2500Mhz mark, and motherboards only support 1600Mhz DDR3 today... So buying a motherboard/RAM/CPU combo today, will be pointless for the future.

I was hoping to go with a Q6450 & 8GB DDR2 800 to future proof myself. As we all know, most games will become more GPU dependent then CPU, so I wouldn't worry about having more then a Quad Core @ 3.4Ghz to be honest.

What do you guys think? I wouldn't want the extra 4GB if its a pure waste.
