PPC media player doesn't play .avi's
You should try the Sync button on the desktop media player. It will
attempt to convert the files to a format for PPC which it can read.
Connect the PPC, allow it to sync and then media player should be able
to 'see' it as a sync device.
Conversion quality settings can be adjusted, and you can also pick to
store the converted file directly on the PPC or on its storage card
(SD or CF card).

In addition to the other post you can see the filetype by unhiding the file
extender. You didn't say which OS you use but try opening File Explorer,
Tools menu, Folder Options, View tab, untick hide extension for known
filetypes.
