Protecting backup solution against PSU failure

Hi all. I'm running a raid1 with two samsung 500gb internal hdds. My biggest worry in terms of safe backups is having a PSU failure that would nuke all my components. I also have an external 500gb samsung on esata. Is the external drive protected from any potential power surges in the even of a PSU blowout? Essentially, can the esata connection nuke the drive under any circumstances? Thanks!

It seesm pretty unlikely that all 3 hard drives would get nuked at the same time .... but lightning does strike SOMEWHERE

why not unplug the external drive when not backing up to it?

I don't think the e-sata drive is at risk, if your PSU blows out it will most likely fry things that are directly connected to it (HDD's , VGA, Mobo, etc), since the e-sata gets it's power from the mobo I think the overvoltage would stop at the mobo power regulators.

Also, good PSUs tend to blow themselves instead of the components in the event of a severe overvoltage from the line, thus protecting your components, but of course there is a limit too, if lightning strikes the pole next to your house there's little a PSU can do.
