What to do when external hard drive fails to read?

Hello
my external hard drive an omega 1 TB cant get detected on the computer and after inserting the USB cable for the external USB ports are stopped to run by windows...pliz help

Best to pull the drive out of the external case and hook it up directly to the MB (SATA probably) to see if the drive works. If it works, then your problem is with the external case, power supply or USB cable. If it is not detected through your BIOS, or not able to be read in your OS, the drive is bad. Hope this helps!

On 2 out of 2 occasions a new/different power supply has resolved issues like those described.
