If this is a separate HDD try checking it on the BIOS if it is detect, if not check both cables, connecting it to the motherboard.

You can open the windows explorer then right click on that drive (D:\)>Properties>Tools(Tab)>click on Check Now(Button) - but then if the drive is not detected on the BIOS I guess it is dead.
