New Rig + Installing Vista... ;(

Not entirely sure whether I should put this here, considering this is a hardware specific site, but what the hell...

More woes from my side of the ocean: I had some trouble earlier with an overheating CPU, which was easily fixed... however, the e-gods have decided to spit on me once more...

Firstly, system specs (all new parts, put together yesterday):

Antec 900 Nine Hundred Gamer Case
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 CPU
PoV NVIDIA GeForce 8800GTS 512MB
4GB Corsair DDR2 RAM 800 MHz
Arctic Power 700W PSU
Seagate ST3500320AS 500GB Hard Drive

PROBLEM 1 (probably linked to problem 2):

The PC intermittently forgets that my HDD exists... usually seems to happen whilst attempting to install Windows Vista Ultimate 32... a hard restart is required, and upon checking the SATA ports in the BIOS, there is no SeaGate ST350.... The PC finds the HDD again if I change its SATA slot, but then will lose it within 2-3 restarts...

PROBLEM 2

Ridiculously slow Vista install time... at least 5 minutes between each stage of the setup, while the long parts often crash about 20-30 mins into the operation... furthest I've got to is the username / password designation, whereupon the computer attempts to complete the installation by restarting, but then is unable to reload the operating system and continue...

Please, anyone, genii wherever you may be! This nub needs help!

It sounds like your HD is failing to me. That HD has a pretty bad track record as far as reliability. Do a Google search for "ST3500320AS problems" and you'll see what I mean. Here's a few:
