I am extreme noob to wireless, but I went with a D-Link 524 (I believe, Im at work now) and a D-Link wireless pci card for my tower. I wanted to have my internet connection when I move stuff down to the garage for LANs and for future expansion of other rooms. But I am disappointed at the D/L from my cable modem. Wired through the router I can pull 3 Mb/s, but on my wireless Im only getting 1.5 Mb/s. I have it set up for 802.11g and it says 54 Mb/s connection, but I am only getting half my speed of my modem. I have also tested this at close range with no change. The router was litterally right next to the adapter card. Could I be missing something or is this to be expected? Thanks.

Firmware, both router and client device (if it will let you flash it), drivers for the client side, and interference are the things you need to take a look at. No, it's not normal to get 1.5 Mb with a 54 Mb AP/Client association. Flash the firmware of the router even if you have the most current version.
