So.. I am planning to build a dream machine using the intel's xeon X5492 the point is that I have several doubts about the motherboard! 1st of all can I use any motherboard? cause I saw something about server motherboards or something similar in tyan motherboards for example, but that are the motherboards that offer me more ram options until 64Gb! And another big doubt came looking for multisocket motherboards, I found some with more than 2 sockets but they were for amd opteron which existence i did neither know about but it is a server processor, what does that mean? ok so until I knew before looking over here I'd use intel's xeon processor and I wouldn't know which motherboard to use.. well I wrote a lot and said nothing so you can see I am totally lost.

P.S. Without counting the amd opteron just intel's xeon can be built on a multisocket motherboard right?

Opteron and 5000 series Xeon processors are designed for multisocket motherboards. I wouldn't use X5492 processors to build a dream machine. I'd select the newer and faster 5500 series Xeon processors.

but 5492 is 3,4 ghz and has 12 mb cache while the 5590 is 3,33ghz and has 8mb cache..*-) and the bus speed is in diferent units so i dont really know the difference but I could maybe use the 7460 with 6 cores also when it comes just until a 2,66 ghz clockspeed i supose the 6 cores must be faster

but if I needn't care about the word "server" and I can install other grafic cards in the tyan mobos I'd take the amd with a tyan mobo I think is the biggest and fastest combination I think I could combine 24cores with 64gb ram! sounds huge! doesnt it?

The 5590 is much faster than the 5492. It also is faster than a 7460. The benefits of the 7460 is that you can install 4 processors on a motherboard while you can only use two 5590. Read http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.aspx?i=3536&p=1 where a Dual Xeon X5570 server is almost as fast as Quad Xeon 7460 servers. A dual Xeon X5590 server should be as fast or faster than Quad Xeon 7460 servers. A single 7460 just can't match the performance a single X5590.

It sounds huge, but costs vs performance is what counts. Building a dual X5590 server is less expensive. You need to focus on what the system will be used for and then build it accordingly.
