Formatting dvd-r

Hello,
I NEED TO FORMAT A DVD-R TO BE USED IN RECORDABLE DVD-MACHINE THE INFORMATION TO KEEP IS NOW ON SKY+

You cannot format a DVD-R. DVD-r's are Write once only.

I believe you should just be able to pop in the DVD-R and start recording right away.
