I did a quick scan on here and didnt see anything specificly about what I am going to ask.

I just attended a tech event where i was informed that the i7 line is being phased out, at least the lower end "affordable" ones are. i found 2 or 3 websites to confirm that. Somethign about intel wanting to establish a clear definition that the i7's are for enthusiests only.

I am asking here because those other sites are probably full of propaganda and garbage.

As i am about to assemble a system in september and was looking forward to purchaing a lower end i7, i have now become concerned. Can anyone possibly clarify this, or confirm the worst?

and if anyone wants to add their 2 cents. I game religiously, i upgrade my system about once ever 2 years, i currently run
q6600
4gb of ram
intel dp35dp mobo
650 watt collermaster power supply.
bfg 260 oc, i do not currently, nor plan to SLI.
4 hd's in 2 raid configs.

look at the latest roadmap, the 920 is not being phased out anytime soon, however the 950 will be replaced by the 960 and the 975 will be replaced by Gulftown. And the 960 will live alongside the 870 while the 920 lives alongside the 860.

^ well a few months ago everything pointed to phasing out the i7 920 and 950 because of LGA1156 (the i7 8xx series belongs to this, and the 860 and 870 cost about the same as the 920 and 950).

however the Roadmap that was leaked a few days ago shows us otherwise, and I'll try and find it for you.

ha, no worries, ty for the help!

Going off what you said, and the info provided from the chart i may see where the confusion lies.

The socket 1366 is being phased out and replaced by the 1156, wich is what all of the I5's use.

That said, it looks as though they are simply consolidateing sockets?

Or did i get distracted by somethign shiney misinterperate that? :)
