Cpu

I have a Asus P4GE-MX motherboard with an Intel 1.5 pentium 4 cpu. I have recently downloaded and installed the most current bios for the motherboard. However the computer continues to run slow and when connecting to the web or doing many tasks if you go to taskmanager and open the CPU process page there usually are only a few items running high. The cpu usage can lock up at 100% or elevate to 100% and return to 5% after loaded.

I thought this 1.5 pentium with over 1g of ram would run quick and process items quickly.

Could my processor be failing or do I just need to upgrade to a socket 478 18-25 mhz. chip for curing the high cpu usage issue.

Thanks

Upgrading the BIOS shouldn't make a P4 1.5 run faster. By current standards they are very slow and are not well suited to multitasking. A P4 1.5 was fine when running Windows 2000, but XP and particularly Vista require more powerful CPUs to feel snappy.

According to http://www.cpu-upgrade.com/mb-ASUS/P4GE-MX.html, the fastest CPU is a 3.4 GHz, but it might be more difficult to find than the 3.06 Ghz. Even a 2.8 GHz would be much faster.

My gpa has a 2.8Ghz P4 - the thing is as slow as molasses. They are old school procs that pale in comparison to today's modern CPU's.

My suggestion: Spend $300 and build yourself a nice computer, or buy one.
