Motherboard - Asus NodusM3
CPU - AMD Athlon 64 x2 4100+ Dual Core
RAM - 2GB DDR2 533 (plan on replacing it with 4GB of DDR2 667)
Video Card - Nvidia GeForce 8600GT 256mb (still a somewhat decent card, but I need something with some more kick to it, plus it's a 2 year old card)
PSU - Antec 430W Earthwatt (2 years old)

Any chance of running the 9800GTX or 250?

A GTS 250 or HD 4770.
I would recommend a HD 4850 if u can go for it else stick to Nvidias GTS 250. It is really good

+1 for the 4770...
But if you get a 4850 for cheap-around the 4770 price, then get that...

+1 for the HD 4850

HD 4770. I think your PS would be fine and your CPU sure couldn't make use of any more GPU than that.

^+1 HD 4770.

I myself am a huge nvidia fan, but on that processor and PSU the 4770 is the best graphics card for your system at the moment.

you guys absolutely positive my PSU can handle the HD 4770?
don't i need a 450W or 500W?

That psu could handle a 4870, it just doesn't have dual pcie connectors.

Yes it can handle the 4770. Also, for the little amount of power it consumes, the 4770's performance is really second to none.

Good luck

And that is using a more powerful CPU than you have. You're system isn't especially power hungry.
Your Antec EA430 has more +12V power than many average 450W and lower quality 500W PSUs.

You can go up to gtx285/4890. I would recommend a gtx260/4870 if you play at 1650x1050 or higher.

Yes...
The 9800GTX or GTS250 require a 450w psu with 24a on the 12v rails.
The earthwatts 430 has 30a on the 12v rails, which is more than enough. The 430watts is continuous, reaching closer to 500w at peak.

At a given price point, ATI and nvidia are comparable in performance. Don't sweat minor differences unless it is for one game you play exclusively.
I would stick with nvidia since you can just drop in a new card.
