possible to run a CLEAN install (meaning formatting the entire hard driev)
with all the xp setup files in an i386 folder on my D drive or another

Remove Windows XP on D from your BOOT.INI file and then format D in
FAT32. Start Windows XP on C and copy the files from the CD to the D
drive. Boot from a DOS disk (available from www.bootdisk.com) and run
the Windows XP Setup from D, let Setup reformat C and install Windows
XP here.
